I’m not quite sure if it’s a UFO. Could be the setting moon for all I know. But I don’t know a lot of strange activity goes on in this part of the country, especially with the secret air force bases close by.

So you and your significant other have planned a romantic getaway in Lake Tahoe this winter. You’ll go skiing, taking a scenic drive and eat at fancy restaurants. One thing you might not be thinking of, but I highly recommend is a horse-drawn carriage ride. Sure it’s a little off the map and old school, but nothing says romance like riding through the snow on a horse drawn carriage while sipping on hot cocoa.

There are two companies I wanted to feature today – I feel they offer the best rides for the best price.

Lake Tahoe Horse & Carriage Rides

They offer private rides from 35-60 minutes and are great for romantic nights, wedding parties, anniversaries, birthdays and more. This company specializes in carriages rides, rather than sleigh rides so if you’re not one for the backcountry or are planning a summer trip then this is the pick for you.

Borges Sleigh Rides

Located in Stateline, Nevada, Borges Sleigh & Carriage Rides has been in operation for over 40 years serving the Lake Tahoe area with the some of the best rides available. Sleigh rides start at $10 for children and $20 for adults. Check out this video to get an idea of what to expect.

One thing that makes Emerald Bay unique (and I’m not talking about the beauty) is the way it is protected. Emerald Bay is a California State Park and not only is the land protected, but so is the surrounding water and everything beneath it – rock formations, ship wrecks, etc. You can’t disturb any of it.

The bay is about 1.7 miles in length, and about two-thirds of a mile wide at its widest point. In extremely harsh winters, it’s not uncommon for parts of the bay to freeze. You can get to Emerald Bay by State Route 89. It’s near the southwest shore of the lake, on the California side.

If you walk along the creek bed from September through early November, you will probably see thousands of red salmon as they make their run up the stream.

This video is a montage of still photographs of the Taylor Creek marsh area in the Lake Tahoe Basin in California. It’s a good representation of the color you can expect to see in mid-October.
